There’s an old saying, “measure twice, cut once.” But the real cause of incorrect cuts isn’t the measuring, it’s the marking. J. Pickens explains his best method for accurately marking measurements on wood to help you get the right cut every time.

  1. Drawing a V doesn’t make sense. The point of it is still the width of a pencil mark, so drawing a line with a well sharpened pencil is just as effective.

I do recommend measuring and marking two points along the cut and using your square to make the line across them. This will help confirm your board is square

  2. Nice, but where to mark in relation to the marks on the ruler? The lines demarcating the measurements have some thickness themselves. Is the dead-on measurement to be in the center of that ruler mark, on the left edge, or on the right edge?

  3. Ok so say you’re doing some finish work and you measure and mark correctly do you want the edge of the board to be in the center of the line say hypothetically right on the 24” line or do you want it to go to the end or do you want it to stop right when it gets there? Is that a dumb question?

  4. I love "positive self talk" so before I start the secular saw I tell myself softly "intense focus". I listen to the saw start and the saw "eats" the line thinking about not damaging the building material side.

  5. I usually measure from the top side or bottom side of the board to keep the tape straight. Followed with a small hash mark rather than a line. The v works well to.

  6. Question: once you make the mark with the “V” and mark the line through its center when it comes time to cut the piece, do you cut down the line or do you cut to the left or right of the line so the line is still there once you make you cut? Taking into account the blade thickness, if you cut right down the line it seems you’ll be too short?

  7. Chalk….doesn’t have the accuracy or fine point precision for marking and cutting in my honest opinion. That’s just me.

  8. Iv started woodwork no training but i love it, so i will try your example of marking the woo on how to get them asll the one lenght, thats my problem

  9. But how do you know which side of the mark to cut?
Say you mark out 10 pieces on 1 plyboard and walk away. That’s the part that gets me.
